1992 SEA TURTLE NECROPSY RESULTS MAR 021993 NLR-E93080 SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NO. 50-272 AND 50-311 Please find attached, three sea turtle necropsy forms completed for the three sea turtles recovered dead from the Salem Generating Station circulating water intake structure during the summer of 1992.

The sea turtles, one green and two Kemp's ridley, were necropsied on January 22, 1993 at the OKEANOS Ocean Research Foundation in Long Island, New York.

Necropsies were performed by Steve Morreale of OKEANOS, Jennifer Griffin of PSE&G and Mike Haberland of PSE&G.

Hubert Paluch, DVM was in attendance.

Recovered during routine cleaning of circulating water intake trash bars at 1000 hours0.0116 days <br />0.278 hours <br />0.00165 weeks <br />3.805e-4 months <br /> on August 31, 1992. Resuscitation procedures were applied but were unsuccessful. Placed on ice.

GROSS FINDINGS: Extemal, Skin, Plastron, Carapace Severe gash on left side of head behind jaw, mid ventral up to eye level (see diagram on reverse side). Minor gashes on plastron. Otherwise in good shape.

HEAD: Eyes, Nares, Salt Glands, Brain Head gash mentioned above.

SKELETAL a11d MUSCLE:

Muscles and skeleton look good.

GASTROINTESTINAL: Liver, Spleen, Pancreas, Mesentary Looks normal, slightly necrotic. Eel grass in esophagus, stomach empty but may have been cut or ruptured. Some food in small intestine, much food in large intestine - mostly vegetation, a few small pieces of crab. Also one small piece of plastic, two small pieces of rubber (texture of balloon material) and one small piece of cloth found in intestines.

LUNGS and llEART: Trachea:1 Bronchi, V~ls Slightly necrotic, otherwise normal.

UROGENITAL: Kidneys, Bladder, Gonads, Cloaca Slightly necrotic, otherwise normal.

SEX and Determining Technique:

Undetermined.

Recovered when station personnel were retrieving a loggerhead sea turtle. Appeared dead on recovery, resuscitation procedures were applied but were unsuccessful. Placed on ice.

GROSS FINDINGS: External, Skin, Plastron, Carapace Externally looks healthy and normal. Eight slight scuff marks on carapace.

HEAD: Eyes, Nares, Salt Glands, Brain Minor cut on left half tip of upper beak, below nostril opening.

SKELETAL and MUSCLE:

Moderately decomposed - organs are becoming indistinct. Muscle tissue is bubbly - necrotic.

GASTROINTESTINAL: Liver, Spleen, Pancreas, Mesentary Liver tissue is smooth, no crystalline structures. Liver is becoming soft and separates easily -

necrotic. Intestine lining breaking down, large intestine indistinguishable from small intestine.

Food material (pieces of swimming crab) found throughout digestive system, crab material abundant in stomach.

LUNGS and llEARJ': Trachea, Bronchi, Vessels Lungs look normal, bubbled with gas. Heart very mushy - necrotic.

UROGENITAL: Kidneys, Bladder, Gonads, Cloaca Necrotic, difficult to identify kidneys.

SEX and Determining Technique:

Undetermined - no gonads are visible.

SKELETAL 11Dd MUSCLE:

Muscle tissue is bubbly - necrotic, otherwise normal.

GASTROINTESTINAL: Liver, Spleen, Pancreas, Mesentary Liver is smooth, normal. Intestines somewhat necrotic. Large intestine ruptured. Swimming crab parts throughout stomach, large intestine and small intestine.

LUNGS and HEAR..T: Trachea, Bronchi, Ves.wls e

Lungs are bubbled and holding air, otherwise normal. Necrosis setting in.

UROGENITAL: Kidneys, Bladder, Gonads, Cloaca All organs look normal, kidneys identified.

SEX and Determining Technique:

Female - obvious follicles.
