September 14, 1979 SNRC-429 Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 Shoreham Nuclear Power Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-322

Dear Mr. Denton:

In my letter SNRC-379, dated April 19, 1979, I crpressed our concerns over the need to move forward with the Shoreham proceedings and the importance of your Staff's publishing the Safety Evaluation Report for Shoreham.

We recognize that the Staff's review of Shoreham (and other pending applications) has been s. owed by the Three Mile Island (TMI) incident since many of your Staff experts who would otherwise have spent their time on casework have been diverted to TMI studies.

As indicated in my previous letter, the completion of the Staff's review and issuance of the Shoreham SER is central to the ACRS review of the station, and to the beginning of the ASLB hearings.

It has been five months since the TMI cccident, and the Staff studies occasioned by it either have been completed or are nearing completion.

Thus, we anticipate that Staff experts will be available in the near future to complete the review of the "near term" OL applications.

Since the Staff review of Shoreham was well advanced prior to TMI, we expect that a Shoreham SER would be issued within a few months after the resumption of casework on the Shoreham docket.
