Georgia Power Company Plant E. 1. Hatch Baxley, Georgia Reportable Occurrence Report No. 50-366/1979-123 On November 17, 1979, with the reactor in the run mode at 95% FMt, the plant staf f was performing plant procedure HSP-2-3182, Plant Service Water Purp Operability Test. This was being run as part of the monthly ASME Section XI inservice inspection program for the plant service water pumps.      During the performance of this procedure it was found that 2P41-C00lL pump would not pump the required flow, 6392 GPM, to meet the procedure requirements. The actual flow was 5800 CPM.
This failure was due to normal expected wear on the pump impeller seal rings and bearings. The service of this pump is pumping raw river water which contains some silt. The as found condition of the pump revealed that the seal ring average clearance was 177% of the original specificaticas and the bearing average clearance was 166% of the original specs. This is the first rebuild for the subject pump since it was initially placed in service in 1977.
The pump was rebuilt and returned to the original specifications. It was placed back in service on November 22, 1979. lhis pump is one of a set of four. The A punp of this set was rebuilt in early November and reperted on LER No. 50-366/1979-117. The D pump of this set is presently out of servi ce now for rebuilding and will be reported on LER No. 50-366/1979-126. This is
'-    the first rebuild for each of these pumps since initial installation.
Presently a study is under way to find ways to extend the service periods for these type pumps at Plant Hatch. Certain design changes have already been incorporated on the Unit 1 Plant Service Water Pumps that have resulted in extending the service periods for these pumps.      Some of these changes were incorporated in the initial design for the Unit 11 pumps and some were incorporated during the start-up phase of Unit II.
The present service period for our plant service pumps on both units appears to be ranging f rom 18 to 24 months of continuous operation.
The RHR Service Water Pumps at Plant Hatch are of this same design and also pump raw river water. These pumps are also included in the study on extending the service period.
