NRC Letter dated September 30,1996, GL 96-06, " Assurance of Equipment Operability and Containment Integrity During Design-Basis Accident Conditions" j

GL 96-06 requested licensees to determine: (a) if containment air cooler cooling water systems are l

susceptible to either water hammer or two-phase flow conditions during any postulated DBA conditions; and, (b) if piping systems that penetrate the containment are susceptible to thermal expansion of fluids so that overpressurization of the piping could occur.

GPU Nuclear Inc. (GPUN) intends to complete the requested actions and submit a sununary report by January 28,1997 as requested by the GL. If the results of the industry meeting held on October 29,1996 indicate that more extensive analysis / testing may be required, GPUN will advise the NRC of an alternative date for our submittal.
