Request:

Staff of Congressman Salud Carbajal is asking how much spent fuel Diablo Canyon produces in a year, on average. He is also asking about the estimated amount for Diablo Canyon at the end of its current licenses in 2024 and 2025.

He is trying to estimate the amount of spent fuel produced with the extended life of Diablo Canyon.

Response

Each fuel assembly contains approximately 929 lbs of uranium equal to 0.421421 metric tons uranium (MTU), and is typically used in three operational periods with approximately 75 to 85 of the 193 fuel assemblies being replaced at each refueling outage (18-20 month cycle). Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has planned for the following amount of fuel for extended Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) operations and also converted this to an annual average.

DCPPs average annual use of fuel is approximately 47.20 MTU.

If DCPP were shut down in 2024/2025, DCPP will have produced a total of 1857.20 MTU.

For operation from 2024/2025 to 2029/2030, an additional 227.57 MTU will be utilized.

Please let me know if you need any additional information or have any questions.

Thanks,

Michael,

Good afternoon. We need to get back to him in a few days.

Thanks, Sam
