[External_Sender] Public comment on Monticello nuclear power station license renewal application
To the Nuclear Regulatory Commission:
Xcel Energy is seeking the approval of a Site-Specific Environmental Impact Statement for its Monticello nuclear power station license renewal application. This application is for a second 20-year period for this facility, which is located in Minnesota upstream from the Minneapolis-St.
Paul metropolitan area on the Mississippi River. The Monticello nuclear power stations current operating license expires September 8, 2030. The nuclear plant will then be 60 years old. The extension for another 20 years beyond that seeks to increase its operating license from 60 to 80 years.
Monticellos design is a General Electric Mark I Boiling Water Reactor (BWR). I urge you to deny any further extensions of this facilitys operating license. These aging BRWs are nothing less than a ticking time bomb. They are dangerous, expensive to operate, and they generate tons of high-level radioactive waste that cannot be disposed of, it can only be isolated and must remain so for thousands of years. A major accident, such as a coolant leak or loss of power to the facility, would endanger the air and water for millions of people downstream.
This facility should be shut down immediately and replaced with solar and wind energy, which is readily attainable and which does not pose any of the dangers associated with a nuclear generation station. If nothing else, at least deny any further licensing extensions for this facility.
Sincerely,
Patrick Bosold 202 N. 5th St.
