==Dear Mr. Knudson:==

On July 18, 1985, a release of approximately 14000 gallons from outfall 01B had a pH of 9.1 SU, which was outside the permitted range of 6-9 SU. We became aware of this noncompliance while preparing Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs) for July 1985 on August 5, 1985. Releases" from this outfall occur on a batch basis from holdup tanks of treated wastewater which are sampled prior to release, and reprocessed if any parameters are out of specification. Releasing this wastewater was contrary to procedure, however it is thought to have been an oversight, as (1) the pH was very close to the permitted range (in fact, the pH meters used at Waterford 3 read to two                  -
decimal places and the pH was recorded as 9.09 SU); and (2) the release, was not reported as a noncompliance, but rather found in the logs when preparing the data for the DMRs. Personnel involved with sampling and approving releases of wastewater have been reminded of procedures and effluent limita-tions so as to avoid similar incidents in the future. As this was a batch release, the noncompliance occurred only for the length of time required to release the 14000 gallons of wastewater.
Should you wish to discuss this matter further, please contact Chadi Groome of our Nuclear Licensing office at (504) 595-2846.
Very truly youys, 8509050343 850009
