Crystal River Unit 3 Docket No. 50-302 Operating License No. DPR-72 Special Report On Inoperable Seismic Monitoring Equipment

==Dear Sir:==

On October 21, 1983, Florida Power Corporation (FPC) received notification from Kinemetrics Systems that magnetic tape cassettes (S12 and SI3), sent to them on September 25, 1983, were blank. Therefore, no data was recorded from these channels for September,1983. This special report is forwarded in accordance with Technical Specifications 3.3.3.3 and 6.9.2. Preliminary investigations into the failure of the cassettes to record any data indicate these tapes have been used past their natural end-of-life.
The magnetic tape cassettes containing the data foi October's Channel Checks have been sent to Kinemetric Systems for analysis. Results are expected to be available by the second week in November 1983.
FPC will followup this special report, detailing the results of further investigation, on November 20,1983, with a Licensee Event Report.
Sincerely,
                                  /
