Subj ct:    BEAVER VALLEY UNIT 1 SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS On. April 30 at 8:52 p.m. with Beaver Valley Unit 1 at 10 percent power, operators manually tripped the main unit generator due to problems with the generator hydrogen seal oil system. The plant had recently ccmpleted
-cn 18 day surveillance testing outage and was preparing to synchronize to the transmission grid when the generator hydrogen cooling panel trouble clarm activated. Field operators were dispatched and noted that the generator seal oil pressure was low. Because the hydrogen pressure inside the generator had decreased 6 psig from a pre-event value of 69 psig,
-atation personnel evacuated the turbine building. Explosive gas surveys indicated no hydrogen accumulation present. Normal access to the turbine              l bu:,1 ding was . restored at 9 :16 p.m.
on May 1, another attempt to synchronize the main unit generator was attempted. Operators experienced continuing problems with maintaining scal oil system pressure and tripped the main unit generator at 6:08 a.u., prior to synchronization with the transmission grid. The Nuclear-Sh:.f t Supervisor directed operators to perform a normal reactor shutdown from 15 percent reactor power and achieved Mode 3 (hot standby) at 11:41 c.m. The unit remains in Mode 3 with the generator degassed of hydrogen.           -
! .Praliminary analysis indicates that impurities in the seal oil system clogged the in-line filters and resulted in a reduction in oil pressure
!  to the generator hydrogen seals. Investigation into the exact nature of the' impurities continues, but the licensee believes that the impurities
,  cre internal corrosion products. The licensee plans to meintain the plant              l in Mode 3 while they perform a generator hydrogen seal oil system flush              j End verify the condition of the main turbine lube oil system. Plant i
rantart is-scheduled for late this' week.                                            3
-The NRC residents observed the plant shutdown and continue to monitor plant, activities, f
