At the time of the inspection, the licensee possessed two troxler model 3400 series gauges. The licensee had three employees, including the radiation safety officer (RSO), who had been trained by the manufacturer to use the devices. The gauges were used at temporary job sites where NRC maintains jurisdiction, namely Missouri. The licensee also possessed a State of Kansas license that authorized the storage and use of portable gauges in Kansa PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS The inspector interviewed the RSO and a trained portable gauge user. The RSO demonstrated how the devices were secured when not in use or under constant surveillance while in NRC jurisdiction. The trained user demonstrated how a gauge would be transported when taken to a temporary job site, and provided examples of the shipping/transportation documentation and emergency procedures that accompanied each gauge when transported to a job site. Gauges were always returned to the main office in Kansas for storage and never stored at temporary job sites. The licensee only performed routine maintenance/cleaning of the gauges. Servicing of the gauges that involved removal of the source rod was performed by the gauge manufacturer. The licensee possessed two survey meters that were calibrated on an annual basis. Authorized users were issued personal dosimetry, which was exchanged quarterl The inspector reviewed records of training (including HAZMAT certificates), personal dosimetry, gauge use log records, results of sealed source leak tests and physical inventory, transportation binders that accompanied each gauge to a job site, and survey meter calibration record No violations of NRC requirements were identified.
