UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON , D.C. 20555-0001 October 5, 2018 The Honorable John A. Barrasso Chairman, Committee on Environment and Public Works United States Senate Washington, DC 20510
Dear Mr. Chairman:
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am transmitting the 21st monthly report in response to the December 21, 2016, letter from the Committee on Environment and Public Works and the Clean Air and Nuclear Safety Subcommittee, and your letter of October 31, 2017. This report reflects updates through August 2018.
Although not an event that occurred during the August reporting period , on September 25, 2018, the NRC entered into an agreement with the State of Wyoming ,
transferring regulatory authority to the state over certain radioactive materials. Wyoming becomes the 38th State to sign such an agreement with the NRC. With this agreement, the NRC transfers to Wyoming the responsibility for licensing , rulemaking , inspection and enforcement activities necessary to regulate source material involved in uranium or thorium milling and the management and disposal of milling waste, or mill tailings. Fourteen uranium recovery licenses will be transferred to Wyoming's jurisdiction . Before entering into the agreement, the NRC determined that Wyoming's radiation control program is adequate to protect public health and safety and is compatible with NRC regulations .

Sincerely,
Enclosure:
