==SUBJECT:==
WATTS BAR NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1 -  RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER2006-03: POTENTIALLY NONCONFORMING HEMYC AND MT FIRE BARRIER CONFIGURATIONS (TAC NO. MD1648)

==Dear Mr. Singer:==

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) acknowledges the receipt of your response toGeneric Letter (GL) 2006-03, "Potentially Nonconforming Hemyc and MT Fire Barrier Configurations."  Under oath or affirmation, in your response dated June 7, 2006, you stated that Hemyc or MT fire barrier materials are not used at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, Unit 1. Also, you stated that Watts Bar uses fire barriers other than Hemyc or MT, which are designedand installed as approved by the NRC staff. Your responses to GL 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers," described the fire barriers used to separate redundant safe shutdown trains located within the same fire area at Watts Bar. Your December 18, 1995, letter stated that the work associated with the resolution of GL 92-08 for Unit 1 had been completed. The NRC issued a letter on January 6, 1998, stating that the NRC staff had determined that the actions requested in GL 92-08 were complete for Unit 1. The basis for stating that these other fire barriers meet NRC requirements should be maintained on site, and will be subject to inspection during the normal NRC inspection process.If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-3974.Sincerely,/RA/Brendan T. Moroney, Project ManagerPlant Licensing Branch II-2 Division of Operating Reactor Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor RegulationDocket No. 50-390
