==Dear Mr. Givens:==

This letter is a followup to the verbal notifications made by telephone on June 6, June 9, and June 10,                   1986,  of overflows of the River Bend Station cooling towers.
On    June 5, 1986 from about 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the cooling towers overflowed with                an      estimated       maximum discharge rate of 1,000 gpm at the peak. Analysis of the cooling water during the period indicated a maximum total chlorine of 0.3 mg/l and a maximum free available chlorine of 0.1 mg/1. The overflow was caused when the cooling tower blowdown was secured because of high temperatures.
On June 8, 1986 from about 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., the cooling towers overflowed with                 an     estimated       maxinum discharge rate of 1,000 gpm at the peak. Analysis indicated that no free or residual chlorine was discharged.                         The m     overflow was caused by the makeup water valve sticking.
ce of       On June 9, 1986 from about 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., the 88     cooling towers overflowed with                 an     estimated       maximum on     discharge rate of 500 gpm at the peak. Analysis indicated
* no free available chlorine and a total residual chlorine of gd     0.1 mg/l in the discharge. @          In all three incidents the overflow was discharged via                          l oe     Outfall 006 and in no case was there evidence of adverse                         ,Q.pi
$$m    impact on the receiving waters.                 Gulf States Utilities Company      is evaluating possible measures                  to prevent a recurrence of these events.
