Sheehan (610)337-5331/e-mail: nas@nrc.gov NRC, COMPANIES TO DISCUSS LICENSE TERMINATION PLAN FOR SAXTON NUCLEAR EXPERIMENTAL PLANT ON MAY 25 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting on Thursday, May 25, on a request by the owners of the decommissioning Saxton Nuclear Experimental Plant to terminate the facilitys NRC license. The plant is located in Saxton (Bedford County), Pa.
At the meeting, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Saxton Fire Hall, 8th and Norris Street in Saxton, NRC staff will discuss the License Termination Plan for the plant and the license termination process; present an update of its reviews and inspections of the plant; receive comments from members of the public; and respond to questions.
Two companies, Saxton Nuclear Experimental Corporation and GPU Nuclear Corporation, are the co-licensees for the 23-megawatt plant, which operated from 1962 to 1972 as a research reactor for the nuclear power industry. Major decommissioning work began at the site in 1998, with the removal of large components such as the reactor vessel, steam generator and pressurizer. The remaining decommissioning and cleanup work is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
In accordance with NRC regulations, all reactor license-holders must submit an application to the agency for termination of the operating license. On February 2nd, the plants owners submitted a License Termination Plan to the NRC. That submission followed three public meetings between NRC staff and the plant owners last year to discuss revisions to a proposed plan. If found acceptable by the NRC staff, the plan would be approved by license amendment, subject to any conditions and/or limitations the agencys staff determines to be appropriate and necessary.
