{{#Wiki_filter:NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs         Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No. 09-010                                                                                       January 15, 2009 NRC ISSUES CITIZENS REPORT SUMMARIZING FY 2008 PERFORMANCE AND ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued its FY 2008 Citizens Report that provides a summary of the agencys fiscal year (FY) 2008 Performance and Accountability Report, which was released in November 2008. The Citizens Report highlights the agencys achievements in promoting nuclear safety and security while adhering to the principles of regulatory independence, transparency, and reliability.
With the U.S. commercial nuclear industry poised for significant growth, it is more important than ever that the NRC provide effective and efficient regulatory oversight of nuclear materials and facilities, while prudently managing the resources entrusted to it by the American people, said Chairman Dale Klein.
In FY 2008, under the NRCs watch, 104 nuclear power plants operated safely and the public remained protected from unnecessary radiation in the use of nuclear materials in medicine, research and industry. To date, the agency is reviewing 17 Combined License applications to build and operate 26 new nuclear power plants. These proposed nuclear power plants, if approved and constructed, would be the first new plants built in more than 30 years. In addition, the NRC began a full technical review of the U.S. Department of Energys application to build and operate the nations first geologic repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.
