Unusual Event Declared Due to a Chemical Spill On December 1, 1993, at 6:17 pm (PST), the licensee for WNP-2 declared an Unusual Event (UE) due to a chemical spill in the Radwaste Building.                ,
During testing of a new system to decompose an expended refrigerant                 1 (i.e., ethylene glycol), the licensee added an oxidizing agent, hydrogen peroxide. This caused additional heatup and foaming of the mixture and resulted in about 100 gallons of the mixture spilling onto the floor. As a precautionary measure, employees working in the area were moved to a different part of the power plant. The UE was terminated at 9:46 pm after the licensee verified that the chemical reaction and the spill had stopped, that no adverse gas concentrations were present, and that the atmosphere was habitable.
The spill and fumes from this chemical process did not cause any injuries to plant personnel and no safety systems were affected. The plant continued to operate at 100% power. The licensee is cleaning up the spill and has formed an Incident Review Board to more fully investigate the cause of the event.
The licensee notified the State of Washington and Benton and Franklin Counties of this event and issued a press release at 10:00 pm on December 1, 1993.
