PERSONNEL CONTAMINATION On May 21, 1987, at about 1747 MDT, a plant worker was sprayed with reactor coolant while replacing lead shielding around portions of the Unit 2 post accident sampling system. The worker was not thermally burned, however, he was contaminated with radioactive materials on his head and shoulders. Initial radiation surveys found levels up to 1.1 E6 dpm per probe area. After six decontamination cycles, the worker was allowed to leave the site with levels of 2.3E4 dpm on one side burn and 5E3 dpm on one eye brow. A whole body count indicated the residual activity was due to iodine 131 and 133.
The licensee has initiated an investigation to determine why the worker was sprayed cith reactor coolant. The radiological evaluation is in progress. The licensee's bounding calculations indicate no NRC exposure limits will be exceeded.
The licensee plans to include the incident in their weekly plant status report to the media.
