Zion Unit 1                             X Notification of an Unusual Event Zion, IL 60099                               Alert Site Area Emergency Docket No. 50-295                            General Emergency Not Applicable Subjtct: SHUTDOWN TO REPAIR AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP CIRCUITRY At 11:46 a.m. (CDT), October 25, 1988, the licensee determined that neither of the two motor-driven Auxiliary Feedwater pumps would automatically start with the loss of offsite power and a low-low steam generator level. (Loss of offsite power generates a reactor trip and imediate shrinkage of the steam generator water level, usually below the low-low steam generator level setpoirt.)
Th) licensee declared both auxiliary feedwater pumps technically inoperable and began a controlled shutdown. The unit reached the hot shutdown mode at 2:17 p.m. The licensee also declared an "unusual event" in accordance wi+h its emergency classification procedures.
The unusual event was terminatad at 5 p.m. (CDT), October 25, 1988, after it was determined that a loss of offsite power would not result in an imediate low-low steam generator water level with the unit in hot shutdown. Therefore, the auxiliary feed pumps were considered operable in this mode.
The unit will remain in the hot shutdown mode while the licensee corrects the auxiliary feedwater pump circuitry. This is expected to take 3-5 days to complete.
Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action.
