GAP INVESTIGATION ANNOUNCED The Safe Energy Coalition of Michigan, a public interest group, held a press conference at 9:30 p.m. (EST), January 14, 1987, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, announcing the results of an investigation into the licensee's SAFETEAM program, a program designed to encourage worke-to anonymously register their concerns about activities at Fermi 2.
According to media reports, the investigation, which was conducted by the Government Accountability Project (GAP), contends that the SAFETEAM program was a failure, and accuses the NRC of committing an error in judgment "by providing the SAFETEAM program with regulatory imuni ty."
The report also alleges that the licensee ignored worker complaints and that the NRC did not                                                                                                               i conduct a thorough enough investigation of the SAFETEAM program in 1985.

(Benchmark Corp. was contracted to help Detroit Edison with training problems but quit because the programs they wished to institute were rejected.)
REPORT     It should be realized that Health Physics training was being given as it was available, realizing also that courses were being continually evaluated, upgraded and developed to improve the training. The NRC investigated allegations concerning this subject and found the training acceptable. The NRC Inspection Report numbers are- 50-341/86015 and 50-016/86001 dated April 21, 1986.
Also Nuclear Training Specialists investigated Health Phy' sics and Training Department Contractors and found that Benchmark supplied only one contract employee to the Health Physics organization.
Since this individual is again working here at Fermi, he was asked about the concern. He stated, "When I left in March, 1984, I did so to accept a career development position with another company. When I was here before, I developed and implemented several Health Physics related courses."
