DIESEL GENERATOR REPAIR
! At 8:15 a.m. (CST), February 17, 1986 Emergency Diesel Generator 2A failed during a 24-hour                                          ,
1   test run as a result of broken rocker arms on the number 7 left cylinder. This was the j
s:cond            failure of EDG 2A in five days.
   ! On February 12, during a 24-hour preoperational test run, rocker arms on the number 5 left cylinder failed. The licensee repaired the arms and after a successful surveillance, restarted EDG 2A, only to have it fail on February 17.
j B:cause of the rocker arm problem, the licensee has notified the EDG vendor, Cooper-Bessemer, which will send a representative to the site. In the meantime, Unit I will remain in cold shutdown. EDG 2A is required by technical specifications to be capable of operating as an emergency power supply for Unit l's motor-driven auxiliary feedwater pump.
(Byron Unit 2 is still under construction.)
. Unit 1 will be shut down for a 16-day period while the licensee investigates the diesel

Region III (Chicago) will monitor the licensee's course of action.
