DIESEL GENERATOR FIRE At 1 a.m. (CST), January 25, 1986, the roving Fire Watch discovered burning insulation (lagging) on the exhaust line of Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) #13. (At the time, the EDG was approximately one hour into a test run.)
Ths operator extinguished the fire within a few minutes using a dry chemical extinguisher.
Tha licensee determined that the fire was caused by oil, which had soaked the insulation during a previous EDG disassembly and oil flushing. The fire brigade was dispatched to the fire scene, but was not needed.
During the subsequent removal of the insulation, a minor fire flareup occurred as oxygen was         ,
admitted, but this was easily put out with an extinguisher. EDG #13 was restarted at 10:38 a.m. (CST), but was unloaded and shut down because of leaks on the jacket coolant inlet piping. This apparently was caused by leaking 0-rings resulting from the fire. The coolant leak was repaired and the EDG restarted.
Region III (Chicago) has been following the licensee's course of action.
Tha State of Michigan will be notified.
Tha S:nior Resident Inspector was notified of the fire at 1:30 a.m. (CST), January 25, 1986 and subsequently notified Region III (Chicago) later in the morning. This information is current as of 10:3 a.m.(CST), January 27, 1986.
