SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS On May 3, 1999, at 6:15 p.m., Catawba Unit 2 had a runback / power reduction from 100% power to approximately 10% power due to a main generator protection lockout (neutral ground fault). The unit was subsequently shut down at 5:09 a.m., on May 5, 1999, as a result of unrelated concerns over auxiliary feedwater system operability that were raised due to a potential of excessive fouling and resultant flow degradation in its assured nuclear service water supply piping. (See              j 10CFR50.72 Event Report number 35670).                                             l The licensee is still conducting an investigation into the cause of the ma n generator protection lockout, and is making preparations to inspect and remove any excessive fouling from inside the auxiliary feedwater system's nuclear service water supply piping. Excessive fouling of the nuclear service water supply piping to the Unit 1 auxiliary feedwater system will also be removed prior to the end of the current Unit i refueling outage.
The resident inspectors will continue their independent inspection of these events and monitor the licensee's, recovery actions. This information is current as of 11:00 a.m., on May 5, 1999.
The States of South Carolina and North Carolina have been notified.               .
