SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 72 HOURS On August 8, 1998 at 9:25 p.m.,                                            Catawba Unit 1 completed a plant shutdown and cooldovn when actions to clear / remove ice buildup from a number of its ice condenser ice bed flow channels could not be completed within the 48-hour Technical Specification (TS) action statement. (See Event Number 34614.) Numerous flow channels were identified with an ice buildup greater than the 0.38 inch TS limit. The majority of this ice buildup was located in Bay 5 of the ice condenser and appears to be related to leakage from an ice compressing machine used during previous outages.
Currently, the licensee has cleaned and inspected 23 of t he 24 Unit 1 ice condenser bays from the intermediate deck. Thirteen of the bays have been
  .innpected from the lower inlet plenum.
The licensee has also inspected approximately half of the Unit 2 ice condenser bay flow channels from the intermediate deck with no ice obstructions in excess of TS limits identified.
The resident inspectors and a region based specialist have monitored licensee efforts through the weekend and conducted inspections of the ice condensers for both units. This information is current as of 4:00 p.m.
The States of South Carolina and North Carolina will be notified.
