SHUTDOWN DUE TO STEAM GENERATOR TUBE LEAK On August 21, 1993, McGuire Unit 1 was operating at 100% power and exparienced a Steam Generator (SG) tube leak. At 10:50 p.m. radiation alarms were received from the steam line (Nitrogen 16) process radiation monitor and the condenser air ejector radiation monitor. The licensee initiated its abnormal procedure which directed chemistry technicians to taka SG samples. At 00:36 on August 22, the chemistry samples indicated that the "A" SG had a tube leak of approximately 176 gallons per day (gpd) ,- and the licensee commenced a shutdown. At 5:10 a.m. the unit was taken off-line and the reactor was shut down at 5:21 a.m. At 6:35 a.m.
the licensee commenced cooldown and depressurization in accordance with the abnormal procedure. The resident inspector responded to the site and monitored the shutdown and cooldown. The licensee expects the unit to remain shutdown between 16 and 35 days for inspection and repairs.
Region II will continue to monitor licensee actions to determine the nature of the leak.
The NRC received initial notification of the event by a telephone call from the licensee at shortly after 00:36 to the resident inspector.
Tha licensee does not intend to issue a press release. The NRC will respond to any inquiries received.
