FIFTEEN DAY MAINTENANCE OUTAGE INITIATED BY RESIN INTRUSION INTO STEAM GENERATOR After returning to criticality following a reactor trip from about 15 percent power on January 13, 1988, the licensee identified a resin intrusion from the Powdex Demineralizer System into the secondary side of the steam generator. With the reactor at operating temperature, resin causes a formation of sulphates which is believed to be a prime cause of steam generator tube failures. The Owners Group Guidelines for secondary water chemistry require that sulphate be less than 100 PPB prior to increasing reactor power above 5 percent. Unit I was held at 5 percent for an extended period before increasing power in order to meet the guidelines. Current plans are to hold the reactor at about 350' F. to facilitate "hideout return" and to bring the sulphates into solution and then drain and flush the steam generator. VEPC0 is investigating to determine the cause of the resin intrusion.
The resident inspector is on site and is following the licensee's program.
