UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS Duke Power Company took Catawba Unit 1 -- which was at 100 percent power -- out of service about 2 a.m. (EDT) today to repair two leaks in a resistance temperature detector loop on a reactor coolant system cold leg. One leak is from an instrument line coupling, and the other is from a valve. Both are isolable. Total leak rate was about half a gallon per minute.
Duke estimates that a shutdown longer than 48 hours will be required for cleanup of boric acid around the leaks and for repairs.      The unit will remain in hot standby during this process. Catawba Unit 2 is operating at 100 percent power.
Both Duke and Region II are prepared to respcnd to media inquiries.         The State of South Carolina has been informed.
