MEDIA INTEREST IN AIR LOCK PROBLEM Media interest developed today in an air lock problem identified yesterday at Unit 4 when a routine surveillance test indicated minor pressure leakage on the inside door of the personnel air lock.
The licensee was conducting a routine six-month surveillance in which the personnel air lock was pressurized from its normal 15 pounds per square inch (PSI) to 50 PSI to check for leaks. Evidence of minor inward leakage was identified, and the licensee declared an Unusual Event, brought the unit to hot standby in compliance with technical specifications, and commenced an investigation into the cause.
The unit is expected to be retested and returned to service by late today. Considerable media interest developed. Both the licensee and the NRC been responding to media inquiries.
The State of Florida has informed.
The NRC resident inspector will conduct a routine followup.
