UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS Duke has taken Catawba Unit 1 out of service while a damaged journal bearing is being replaced in one of the unit's two Transamerica Delaval diesel generators. Shutdown began yesterday upon the expiration of a 72-hour limiting condition for operation. The damaged bearing was found during routine maintenance. The other diesel generator is operable.

Previous diesel generator main bearing failures have been experienced on Catawba Unit 2, which is operating at 100 percent power. Duke plans to restart Unit 1 on March 10.
!   Duke is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
The State of South Carolina has been informed.
