UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN LONGER THAN 48 HOURS Florida Power & Light (FPL), which took St. Lucie Unit 1 out of service on June 6, intends to begin plugging 17 degraded steam generator tubes in the next day or so. The unit is expected to be shut down about two weeks.
The tube degradation was discovered on May 23, when eddy current date taken during an October-December 1985 refueling outage was reevaluated in light of corrosion-induced defects found during physical examination of three tubes removed during that outage.
During a meeting involving FPL, NRC Region II and the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR)-on May 29 in the NRR offices, it was agreed that St. Lucie Unit 1 could continue operation unit June 29 if primary-to-secondary leakage remained below 0.3-gallon per minute (the technical specification limit is one gallon per minute).                  FPL subsequently decided, however, to proceed with the tube plugging now.               Many workers who were employed during a recent outage at St. Lucie Unit 2 are still on site. Unit 2 is now operating at 100 percent power.
