TRANSPORTATION OF INJURED WORKER TO HOSPITAL A contract construction worker lost his footing and fell about three feet in the drywell at 11:30 p.m. (EST) on February 23, causing him to complain of back pains. The worker was placed on a back board on removed from the drywell. The licensee cut away as much of the worker's protective clothing as possible and did a partial survey which indicated no contamination.
The licensee trans' ported the worker to a local hospital, accompanied by a health physics technician. No contamination was found on the worker, on his protective clothing, in the in the ambulance or at the hospital.
The worker was diagnosed as having suffered only minor injuries and was expected to return to work today.
The licensee declared an Unusual Event.at 1:00,a.m. (EST) on February 24 in order to comply with NRC administrative requirements. The Unusual Event was terminated at 3:00 a.m. (EST).
Both the licensee and the NRC are prepared to respond to media inquiries should they occur.
The State of North Carolina has been informed.
The NRC received initial notification of this event by telephone from the licensee to the headquarters Incident Response Center on February 24 at 1:48 a.m. (EST).
