UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS Florida Power Corporation is making necessary repairs and analyzing the cause of the loss of power to two of four reactor coolant pumps, which caused Crystal River to trip from 93 parcent power at 8:55 a.m. (EST) yesterday. The unit is expected to be out of service for two days.
The power loss apparently was caused by a short-circuited lead from a potential transfonner. Personnel in the area reported arcing and smoke, and the plant fire brigade was dispatched as a precaution. One worker suffered flash burns on an arm and shoulder.
When the trip occurred, a spurious signal from steam generator pressure sensors caused initiation of the auxiliary feedwater system. Operators secured the main feedwater pumps, using the emergency feedwater system to maintain steam generator water levels while the unit was recovering from the reactor trip.                                         ,
The State of Florida has been informed.
