UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 48 HOURS Virginia Power has taken North Anna Unit 1 out of service for repairs of a reactor coolant loop bypass valve which caused leakage in excess of the technical specification limit of 10 gallons per minute. Evaluation and repairs may require several days, the leakage was determined to exceed the limit at 12:35 p.m. (EDT) yesterday when the unit was operating at 100 percent power. Four hours later, after unsuccessfully trying to reduce the leak rate, the licensee began preparations to bring the unit to hot standby, as technical specifications require.      A power reduction began at 5:07 p.m., and an unusual event was declared, in accordance with the plant emergency plan.
By 9:43 p.m., the unit was in hot standby. The unusual event was terminated at 2:43 a.m.
today after the affected valve had been backseated, and the identified leakage had been reduced to 6.13 gallons per minute.
Virginia Power is prepared to respond to media inquiries.
The Comonwealth of Virginia has been informed.
Virginia Power notified the NRC headquarters duty officer of this occurrence by telephone at 5:25 p.m. yesterday. This information is current as of 11:30 a.m. today.
