LEAK DURING REACTOR SYSTEM CHEMICAL DECONTAMINATION With the plant permanently shutdown for decommissioning and the reactor defueled, the licensee identified a -leak of approximately 1.000 gallons of demineralized water and chemical agents used for decontamination of plant systems. The leak was limited to a small section of the floor in the lower level of the Primary Auxiliary Building (PAB). with the remainder of the solution captured in the floor drain system. The licensee had recently initiated a chemical decontamination of the reactor coolant system (RCS). A portion of the leak was detected on the floor of
, .the lower level of the PAB and was attributed to a failure in an instrument line in the letdown system. Based on the volume added to the aerated drain tank-(ADT). the licensee also suspected another source of a leak that went to the floor' drains or sumps, which em A search for another source of leaks was in progress.pty into the ADT.
The letdown system was isolated from the reactor coolant system which stopped the leak. The reactor coolant system chemical. injection was
< discontinued until the leaks could be repaired. There were no )ersonnel
' contaminations resulting from the spill. A vendor cleaned up t1e water containing chemicals from the decontamination process.          No radioactive contamination from the spill was identified outside the building and effluent monitors did not indicate any liquid or gaseous release to the
; environment.        Due to the RCS decontamination in progress, the contaminated water contained higher than normal radioactivity, but was
   .less than 10 Curies of total estimated radioactivity. A press release was! issued by the licensee.
