LOST ONE MILLICURIE P-32 PACKAGE l
On February 12, 1998, at 4: 15 p.m. the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Radiation Safety Officer (RS0) notified NRC Region I that a one millicurie (mC1) phosphorus-32 (P-32) package was missing. The RSO stated that the P-32 package apparently had been delivered to a research laboratory on February _5.1998, and received by a laboratory worker. On February 9,1998, the research investigator called the Radiation Safety Office and requested the one mC1 P-32 package.          Recognizing that this request was for the same licensed material that had already been deliverea the previous Thursday an immediate extensive search and investigation was initiated that included checking laboratories and office areas for contamination as well as the dumpsters. This matter-has also been referred to NIH Police who are investigating the missing P-32 as a possible theft. The RSO said that the investigation is continuing and expanding. Notice of the missing material has been circulated in a desk memo to all authorized users on campus.
NRC Region I is evaluating the ongoing efforts of the licensee to account for the one mci P-32 package.
The State of Maryland and the District of Columbia were notified.
