l This is in response to your letter of July 20, 1987, regarding the spent fuel storage capacity at the_ Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.
1 The NRC report referenced in your letter, NUREG-0020, Volume 10, No. 8, pub-              i lished in December 1986, lists the existing number of spent fuel assemblies stored in the Pilgrim spent fuel pool as 1128 with a total licensed limit of 2320 fuel assemblies. These numbers were correct as of the issue date of the NUREG.
The NUREG also provides the date when spent fuel storage capacity will be exhausted as 1990. This date is calculated using certain assumptions regarding the number of spent fuel assemblies placed in . storage per cycle, a nominal cycle duration and the current fuel storage rack configuration. The                )
calculation does not include allowances for extended outages and does not allow for future storage expansions.
We understand that Pilgrim is considering an extension of the operating cycle              l duration to 24 months. This has been made possible through improvements in fuel design and fuel management. Extension of the operating cycle duration to 24 months would extend the date to approximately 1995.
Other potential methods exist to increase the current spent fuel storage capacity. The spent fuel pool at Pilgrim has sufficient space to accommodate additional fuel storage racks of the current design. Further, it is possible that, with approval, the use of fuel storage racks of a different design or reconfiguration of the fuel bundles could extend the date when capacity is exhausted to, or beyond, the year 2008.
