The unit contains to sealed borosillicate glass disc sources, each having an internal coating of luminescent materials. The source is filled with a 94%
tritium and less than 1% tritium oxide mixture at an internal pressure that does not exceed 2 atmospheres (STD). The sources are contained within a plastic housing with each source surrounded by a transparent cushioning material. A plastic crystal provides an outer protective cover for the holder. The plastic unit is placed into a metal body and neoprene gaskets are used to afford additional impact resistance. The metal housing is crimp            sealed closed.
LABELING:
A metallic name plate is attached to the cievice by both adhesive and drive screws.
The following information is on the nameplate: the wording, "Danger Caution-Radioactive Material," manufacturers name and address, part number, vendor code, isotope and activity, date of assay, and serial number.

CONDITIONS OF MORMAL USE:
The device will be attached to the arms of an air refueling paradogue to outline inflight refueling drogues on a C-130 aircraf t.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
The sealed luminous source was tested to the requirement of ANSI H540. The         l source achieved a classification designation of T4GClX4X444. Additionally,            i the source contained in its sour:e housing was tested the requirements of             ;

Each source is a laser-sealed borosilicate tube with an internal coating of an inorganic lumi-nescent material. Each tube is filled with Tritium gas con-sisting of not less than 94% Tritium and less than 1% Tritium oxide . The internal pressure does not exceed two atmospheres (STP). No single light Wurci, contains in excess of one curie.
Each light source is cushioned within the plastic cavity by use of a transparent adhesive, Dow-Corning RTV-732 or equivalent.
The acrylic housing, with the sources, is mounted in a metal body with neoprene gaskets at each end to provide cushioning. The                1 device is sealed by welding two end plugs on the metal body.
Light is emitted through an open area of the metal body designed to prevent the maximum angle of light emission under conditions of attachment and location within the drogue assembly.
6       l LABELING:        The name plate is printed on aluminum or other metallic tape suitable for installation on a 1/2-inch radius using 3M #467 or            i equivalent adhesive. The name plate is colored in accordance               i with Federal Standard No. 595, and the entire plate meets the              l requirements of mill specification P-15024 and P-19834.                    ;
Information includes the radiation warning symbol, the words "Caution" and "Radioactive", the name and address of the vendor, the isotope and activity, the device identification "Drogue                !
Light", serial number and model number, and vendor iden-                  1 tification.

The device is designed and constructed to be used as an aircraft          I safety device as part of an aerial refueling equipment manufac-           i tured by Sargent-Fletcher, El Monte, California. Each                 .
Sargent-Fletcher drogue assembly, part number 231-5001, will carry six TLS drogue lights.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
The device was tested for conformance with 10CFR32.101.      Based on the result of the test, the device was assigned a performance classification number of T4GC1X4X444. Additional testing was performed to assure that the device met the requirements of the appropriate military standards. The specific tests were similar to those conducted on the previously registered model 42000.

The Hydronautics, Inc. Vapor Trace Analyzer measures 20" x 16" x 10" and weighs about 60 pounds. A detector cell which uses a U.S. Radium Corporation Model LAB-508-1 foil is used in an oven assembly with a maximum temperature control of 225'C and is an integral part of the device.
LABELING:
The exterior surface of the Vapor Trace Analyzer is labeled with the standard plastic radiation label which contains the radiation symbol, the words "Caution Radioactive Material", the isotope, quantity, and date.
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The Hydrenautics Vapor Trace Analyzer is reported to be designed specifically for detection of trace quantities of vapors of explosives.
LIMITATI0t!S AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
No servicing of the tritium foil is to be performed in the field. Should malfunction require replacement of the foil, the entire detector cell will be removed and replaced by a new unit rather than a replacement of the foil. A one-year warranty is provided by Hydronautics for any servicing of the unit. Both an instruction manual and a maintenance manual are provided the customer by Hydronautics.

The source is constructed by sealing gaseous"Hydrogen-3 in a quartz disc coated on the inside with an inorganic phosphoc         The Hydrogen-3 is 'added to a maximum   i activity of I curie and to an internal pressure of 0.33 abnospheres.         The manu-facture purchases the Hydrogen-3 from Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). ORNL certifies the gas to have a maximum tritium oxide content of'one percent.
LABELING:
The source itself bears no labeling.      However, the source is packaged, then labeled and shipped to meet 00T and NRC requirements.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The source will be used in equipment as a UV emitting Light Source. Presently, the Department of the Navy is using this to perform research and development activities.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
i The source was tested by the manufacturer to the requirements of ANSI N540.        The source complies with classification 4 and has achieved a classification designation of T4GC 1333X33.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
No detectable radiation is present at any accessible external surface of the source.
00ALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL _:
Sources are 100% visually inspected at each process and a soak test for 24 hours        -
is performed on all sources prior to shipment. The manufacturer institutes any          !
controls that are required by a contractural agreement.

OESCR!pTION:                                                                              l The gaseous tritium light sources (GTLS) are constructed of a sealed borosilicate glass envelope containing gaseous tritium. The envelopes are filled to a pres-sure ranging from just above zero to a maximum of 2.5 atmospheres.        The glass envelopes are heat fusion sealed by laser or a torch. The intended use of the GTLS will determine what phosphor will be coated to the inside of the glass envelope prior to filling with tritium.       The beta radiation excites the phosphor and can produce wave lengths in the band of 0.1 microns to 10.0 microns depending on the phosphor. One micron is equal to 10
* Angstroms (A).
The sources can be designed to hold a maximum activity of 50 curies. Mb-Microtec builds GTLS to the unique specification of a given user. However, the sources           >
can be grouped in the following series. This grouping concept allows Mb-Microtec 3

The replaceable light module consists of eight basic components, an aluminum back plate, a vinyl light source tray, a polycarbonate window and five light sources.
Each light source contains a maximum of 5 curies of Hydrogen gas. Therefore, the completed module has a maxirrum activity of 25 curies. The light sour:es are mounted with a silicone adhesive into the vinyl source tray,. The back pan, source tray and window are then bonded together at the edges with a high strength double-sided adhesive tape.
At the users request, the appropriate lettering is attached to the outstde of the window.      The' light module may be then placed into a holder that is attached to the structure to hold the device. A special screw is used to secure the 16odule.

The manufacturer has submitted the device to the requirements of ANSI H540          i "Classification of Radioactive Self-Luminous Light Sources. The device achieved     I a ratirg of TSGC 0333X33. Additionally, the manufacturer dKpped a 500 grams weight from a height of six feet on the front and back surface of the device and a 24-hour soak test. The tube is sealed at both ends by a polycarbonate plug. Inside the tabe is a double cylinder borosilicate glass tube coated with the appropriate phosphor. This glass tube is supported and spaced inside the polycarbonate tube with sponge silicon rubber supports. The supports also serve as shock absorbing mounts. Each end top of the polycarbonate tube is threaded to allow for attachment of a handle, threaded dowel or stake. The stake allows the wand to be stuck into the ground in an upright position. A threaded dowel can be used to join several of the wands together to form symbols. The light wand Models 2008-XX ~
and 2009-XX are constructed the same as the above models with the exception that it is 6 1/2 inches longer and contains two double cylinder borosilicate glass tubes coated with the appropriate phosphor end-to-end.

The devices are labeled in accordance with the requirements of Section 32.51, 10 CFR 32.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The light wand could possibly be used in ambient environs throughout the world.
The manufacturer reports that personnel could use the wands in a multitude of applications such as, directing traffic, emergency lighting in mines, helicopter pad lighting or air field markers.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
The manufacturer tested the devices to ANSI N540-1975 requirements. The device achieved a classification of T7 GE0444X44. The device was not tested to failure.
The impact level was conducted with an additional eight drops from two meters.
The wand was dropped witt 4.he axis parallel to the plate to cause the most damage.
Furtermore, the manuf3cture dropped a 750 gram stainless sttel weight from a height of one meter or, the Mngitudinal axis of the wand. A hydrostatic test 5,s performed, the wand was pressured to 75 lbs. for 30 minutes. After the testing, each wand was visually inspected and individually soak tested for 24 hours The analysis results did not exceed the 5 nanocuries release limit for the source.

U.S. Radium Corporation source Model LAB 508-2 beta sources consist of scandium tritide compound deposited on a metallic backing of Type 302 stainless steel (0.002-0.010 inch thick) or 0FHC copper (0.005-0.030 inch thick) of Hasteloy "C" (0.002-0.010 inch thick). The active side of the backing metal foil is coated with a 0.5-3 micron thick layer of scandium tritide by a vacuum deposition method.
Sources will not exceed an area of 4 square inches at a concentration of 4 curies per square inch. Each foil is characterized by measurement of the ionization current and Bremstrahlung and is given a visual examination for flaking, blisters, discoloration or other abnormalities. Each foil is heat treated for 12-24 hrs, at 325'C to out-gas readily releasable tritium and stabilize perfomance under normal
,          operating conditions.
LABELING:
The sources bear no markings.        Intermediate packaging of replacement sources contains warnings and precautions to be taken in handling the sources.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
i Standard sources (16 ea) containing scandium tritide were thermally tested in two Varian aerograph gas chromatography detector cells to characterize the release of tritium as a function of terperature. A nitrogen carrier gas flow rate of 50              j ml/ min, was used in the experiments.       The results indicate that a foil temperature  i of approximately 275'C the tritium release rate is approximately 1 microcurie per         j milliliter effluent and is linear. Above 275'C an exponential increase in the titanium release rate can be expected.

Tritium release is not significantly affected by the carrier gas flow rate.
Foils loaded to 4 Ci/ina were found to emanate 33% more tritium than foils loaded to 1 Ci/ int (as above) using argon-methane gas.         Extreme thermal shock does not cause a sionificant change in the tritium release rate.
Cleaning foil surfaces with harsh or abrasive cleaners may result in variable and large (685 uti) tritium releases and is not recorsnended without extra precautions. The Varian KOH/Me0H cleaning procedure resulted in releases of roughly 0.3 microcuries tritium. Releases resulting from "handling" foils of 0.5 x 0.5 inch and of 1 Curie are shown in Table 2.

The device is fully tested during and following manufacture to ensure no leakage exists.            The vials are mounted on shock mounts inside the sign and the whole permanently sealed shut. The resultant sign is very robust.

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
The device as an exit sign is by its nature self-limiting in use. It should be installed in accordance with instructions that are provided with each device.

Betalights are sealed borosilicate glass tubes, internally coated with a zine sulfide phosphor and filled with tritium gas (HT or T,). The beta-particles resulting from radioactive decay are absorbed by the phosphor, causing it to emit light continuously in the visible spectrum.
The Betalights are produced in a wide variety of shapes and sizes which are usually made to normai glassworking tolerances. The paramcters defining a Betalight are (1) its size and shape, (2) color, and (3) brightness. As(1)and (3) are variable through wide limits as well as tube wall thicknesses (ranging from 0.10 m - 1.0 m), they are too numerous to outline in this sheet.
The manufacturer is authorized to distribute Betalights containing tritium in quantities up to but' not exceeding 10 curies. Betali.ghts containing less than 4 curies are defined by the manufacturer as unpressurized sources because tritium                ,
is loaded into the tubes at pressures under one atmosphere. Betalights containing more than 4 curies are defined as pressurized sources because tritium is loaded into the tubes at pressures exceeding one atmosphere (up to 2-1/2 atmospheres).
LABELING:
The small sizer of the Betalights restrict the use of labels. The standard radiation infomation is specified in documents enclosed in transport packages.
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
Betalights are used for light calibration purposes and as a source of light in various devices such as aircraft markers, compasses, and marine and oceanographic devices.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
The glass is impervious to tritium, absorbs any beta-radiation not already absorbed in the phosphor, and as such does not present any external radiation                  ;

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
After loading with tritium gas, the ends of the Betalight tubes are sealed off using a gas / oxygen flame. The Betalights are leak tested by two methods (1) they are placed in a vacuum chamber for periods ranging between 24 hours and I week. Macrascopic visual disappearance of the light indicates a faulty seal and leakage, and/or (2) they are placed in a known closed volume chamber for                 !
predetermined periods. The air of the closed system is then monitored for tritium.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
The manufacturer has been authorized to distribute Betalights to persons specifically licensed.

* All sub-units are checked before the final assembly to a finished                         )

* The liquid-filled capsule is tested under a pressure of 3 mHg for                         l a period of two hours. If leakage appears, the capsule is rejected.                       I l

* Faultless operatian and quality of work is checked in every product before delivery.

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE A.      These devices are designed, manufactured and tested for use as portable precision compasses and are intended for exempt distribution pursuant to 530.19, 10 CFR 30.
B. The manufacturer, Suunto Yo states that these devices have been designed, manufactured and tested to meet the requirements of 5532.22, 32.23, and 32.24 of 10 CFR 32.
C.      The licensed distributor, the Lietz Company, shall obtain from the device manufacturer certificates of completion of the stated quality control measures perfomed on each lot of devices prior to distribution under the license. Copies of certificates of completed quality control measures shall be maintained for inspection by the Commission.
D.      The Lietz Company shall possess a valid Agreement State of Kansas License authorizing possession of the devices prior to any distribution under the NRC license.
SAFETY ANALYSIS SLNMARY Baned on an examination of the product and a review of the infomation and test data contained in the references listed below, we conclude that the Model KB-14 compass design satisfies the requirements of 532.22,10         ,
CFR 30. Additionally, the device is currently apyfAyed for_distributioC          .

The custom sources are doubly encapsulated and fabricated using 304 stainless steel. Each capsule is sealed by arc welding. The source is designed to allow attachment of a cable assembly. This allows the source to be drawn through a tube that passes by counting equipment on Naval ships. The technicians can determine if the counting equipment and related circurity is operating properly by using this method. The source is normally lockeddin the tube when not in use.
The source models C2106-AB00 and C2106-AC00 are similar in construction, the only difference being that the AB00 has 2.5 curies, the AC00 source has 0.06 curies and is assembled using Monsanto's new welding methodology.
LABELING:
The outer capsule is electro-etched with the radiation trefoil symbol, the words, "Caution Radioactive Material", the isotope and activity date, assay and unique serial number.

The source is used by trained personnel to stimulate counting equipment and to test the circurity and, operability of counting equipment aboard Naval ships. The source is normally protected from the severe environs pssociated with open sea travel.
