ML080660596 and ML083500465, respectively), Luminant Generation Company LLC (Luminant Power) submitted supplemental responses to Generic Letter (GL) 2004-02, "Potential Impact of Debris Blockage on Emergency Recirculation during Design Basis Accidents at Pressurized-Water Reactors," for Comanche Peak, Units 1 and 2. Luminant Power met with the NRC on July 9, 2009, in a public meeting [Reference 3] addressing NRC questions regarding responses to GL 2004-02 [Reference 4] and subsequently participated in a public phone call on August 10, 2009 [Reference 6] to conclude the discussion of the NRC request for additional information from the public meeting. Attachment to TXX-09126 Page 1 of 4 Solving flow problems since 1894 ALDEN September 29, 2009 Description of Latent Fines introduction video:
Smalls fiber batch was prepared in accordance with Comanche Peak test procedure for head loss testing. The testing documented in the video is conducted in the Alden small flume to allow visual access to the water column and hence document the transport of the debris added to the flume. Flow guiding walls were added to the small flume to obtain the same axial velocity profile as was employed during Comanche Peak large flume head-loss testing. The depth of the water column changed between the Design Basis test and the small flume test. The small flume could only accommodate a maximum depth of 3 ft, while the design basis test depth was 4.17 ft. To maintain the same velocity profile a lower flow rate was required for the small flume test. The debris amount was scaled with the reduced flow rate of the small flume to achieve the same debris concentration in the flow. The debris that is used in the video was heat treated nukon, while the debris that was used for testing in the large flume was not heat treated.
The video screen has three parts from cameras collecting data simultaneously. The camera shown in the top right of the screen is used to cover the introduction region of the flume. The top left screen is used to cover movement of the debris downstream in the flume. The lower camera is used to obtain close-ups and details of debris introduction and cover parts of the flume downstream from the top left screen camera region of coverage.
A minimum flow rate of 261.4 gpm was used for the tests below. A 16 ft long section nearest to the strainer of the Commanche Peak large flume wall geometry was used to match the velocities in the large flume test. Figure 1 shows the velocities from the original testing from Areva document # 32-9079948-000. Figure 2 shows a drawing of the walls as installed for the testing in the small flume. The testing that is being simulated is from Areva document #'s 63-9073071-001 and 66-9078989-000.

Chapter 2 0:10 - 1:22                  First debris introduction. The lower screen shows a close-up of the introduction area. It can be clearly seen that upon introduction, the penetration is less than 25% of the water column. The debris is left to settle to the bottom of the flume for five minutes. Figure 3 shows a picture of the debris as it entered the small flume.
