starting valve assembly for the Standby Diesel Generators manuf actured by                                   {
Transa terica Delaval, Inc. of Oakland, California.
l This deficiency has been determined reportable under the provisions of 10CFR21 for Unit I and under 10CFR50.55(e) for Unit 2. Our Final Report for Unit I was submitted by AECM-82/289 dated June 25, 1982. Attached is our Final Report, as supplemented, for both Units I and 2.

Oakland, California and supplied to Grand Gulf by Bechtel Power Corporation, Gaithersburg, Maryland.

A. Description of the Deficiency
 ;                        On June 11, 1982, Mississippi Power & Light Company received a letter j                         from Transamerica Delaval, Inc. notifying us they had informed the NRC of a potential problem concerning the Division I and II Diesel Generators provided to Grand Gulf.
The deficiency involves the length of the capscrew which holds the i
starting air valve assembly in the cylinder head. The capscrews may be bottoming in the tapped holes in the cylinder head before the assembly is properly seated. This could result in insufficient or unequal forces being applied to the air start valve which could result in its failure.

Analysis of Safety Implications Failure of the starting air valve assembly could result in the non-availability of the diesel generator. The diesel generators supply power to systems that are required to shutdown and cooldown the reactor and to maintain the reactor in this condition during a loss of of f-site power.

Mississippi Power and Light received information of the deficiency from Transamerica Delavel, Inc. on June 11, 1982. MP&L completed its evaluation on June 23, 1982. We reported the deficiency to Mr. R. Butcher, of your of fice, on June 23, 1982. The MP&L " Responsible Of ficer," Mr. J. P.
McGaughy, Jr. was notified on June 29, 1982.

There are four diesel generators (two for each unit) supplied by Transamerica Delaval at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. Transame ric a Delaval letter of May 13, 1982, from R. E. Boyer to the NRC identifies other nuclear stations which have similar engines.

A. Corrective Actions Taken MP&L has issued a design change, DCP-32/4059, for the Unit 1 Division 1 and Division II diesels to implement the manufacturer's recommended corrective action. This involves either modifying or replacing the potentially defective bolts.
The work on the Division I diesel was performed under Maintenance Work Order (MWO)-M26237. The work performed under HWO-M26236 completed corrective actions on the Division II diesel.
Our Architect / Engineer initiated CR8122 to track the corrective actions for the Unit 2 diesel generaters.
Actions to preclude recurrence will be provided by Transamerica Delaval since the deficiency originated with their equipment.
