{{#Wiki_filter:No. IV-10-29 Contact:  Victor Dr icks:  (817) 860-8128                 Lara Uselding: (817) 276-6519 August 10, 2010  E-Mail:  OPA4.Resource@nrc.gov NRC TO HOLD REGULATORY CONFERENCE WITH OMAHA PUBLIC POWER DISTRICT ON FORT CALHOUN NUCLEAR PLANT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a regulatory conference with officials from the Omaha Public Power District on Aug. 18 to discuss issues related to the Fort Calhoun nuclear plant flood protection plan. The plant is located near Omaha, Neb.
The conference, which is open to public observation, will begin at 8 a.m. CDT in NRC  Region IV offices at 612 E. Lamar in Arlington, Texas. Conferees will discuss the safety significance, causes and corrective actions associat ed with the apparent violation identified by  the NRC during an inspection completed on June 21.  

NRC inspectors reported that the licensee's flood protection plan may not have properly protected safety-related systems during worst-case Missouri River flooding scenarios. As a result of the inspection, the licensee has taken steps to protect the plant from extreme flooding.
The NRC evaluates regulatory performance at commercial nuclear plants with a color coded process which classifies regulatory findings as either green, white, yellow or red, in increasing order of safety significance. The NRC's preliminary evaluation determined that the the apparent violation was "yellow," meaning it has substantial safety significance.

No decision on the final significance, the a pparent violations or any contemplated enforcement action will be made during the conference. Those decisions will be made by NRC officials at a later time.
