Supplement Response to NIC Request for Mditional Information on Generic Letter 08-01 Reference 6 provided Detroit Edison's detailed response to NIC Request for Mditional Information (RAI) on Generic letter 88-01 regarding Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cra: king (IGSCC) in BNR austenitic stainless steel piping (Reference 4). Subsequently, during the recent first refueling outage of Fall 1989, Detroit Mison cocpleted mitigation of all AEME Section III IGECC susceptible welds at Fermi 2. These welds were also examined by IGSCC Ultrasonic examination methods and no IGSOC was detected. USNIC I ~ January 12, 1990 NIC-89-0297_ 3-i j Page 2_ t. o An NIC gproved Stress I@rovement, the Mechanical Stress l Inprovement Process (MSIP), has been applied to twenty-seven (27) [ AfME III, Class 1, Category G welds, thereby upgrading those welds to Category B., A qualified IG9CC ultrasonic examination of i each weld was performed following the MSIP gplication and no IG90C was detected. 'Ihis conpletes Fermi 2's IGECC mitigation . activities since all A!ME III IGSCC susceptible welds have either had an approved Stress Inprovement applied (IHSI or MSIP) or have [ been solution annealed after welding. (

o IG90C ultrasonic examinations were perforned on twenty-four (24) i ANSI B31.1, Category G welds, thereby upgrading those welds to Category D per Generic Letter 88-01. No IGSCC was detected. Two ANSI B31.1 welds listed in Tables 2 and 3 of Reference 6 (welds W-N22-3234-16HO and SW-N20-B013-NSE) have been deleted since field verification has shown that the shop welded stainless steel safe-end was removed prior to field installation of the feedwater heater. NIC RAI Items 2 & 3). o All of-the welds which are susceptible to IGSCC at Fermi 2 have been determined to be accessible for ultrasonic inspection. Therefore no additional actions, such as those identified in Generic letter 88-01, Table 1, Note, 3 are required. (Reference NIC RAI, Item 4). Tables 2 and 3 of Deference 6 have been revised to incorporate the above information and are provided as enclosures 1 and 2 to this letter.
