STAFF REQUIREMENTS - SECY-21-0033 - REQUEST FOR AN EXEMPTION FROM THE DECOMMISSIONING SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS FOR SHUTDOWN REACTORS AT THE GE HITACHI VALLECITOS NUCLEAR CENTER The Commission has disapproved the staffs recommendation under Option 1 to grant GE Hitachi an exemption under Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 50.12, Specific exemptions, to extend the decommissioning schedule for the Empire State Atomic Development Associates Vallecitos Experimental Superheat Reactor, General Electric Test Reactor, and Vallecitos Boiling Water Reactor sites and instead has approved denial of the request under Option 2.
Given the information learned about this site and similarly situated sites in SAFSTOR, the staff should consider whether changes to the inspection program or additional or modified oversight is warranted. The staff should provide a Commissioners Assistants Note outlining the results of its evaluation.
