SUBJECT:
MATERIALS TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT NEAR ENNIS, TEXAS (UPDATE)
-Inspectors from NRC Region IV and from the Texas Bureau of Radiation Control responded to the event reported to RIV on September 8 by the Ennis, Texas, fire-chief. Upon arrival, the inspectors found the situation to be much different
- i. from what had been reported.
L Instead of having been.found on I-45, the box had been found behind a grocery store just off of I-45. Instead of the interstate having been blocked off, only the interstate access ramps had been blocked off. No residences had been evacuated.
The orange colored box was found to be a Campbell-Pacific moisture / density gauge, which had been stolen from a Texas licensee on August 16, 1989. The gauge was intact and undamaged.
The' radiation level (1 rad per hour at 3 feet) reported to RIV apparentiv resulted from improper function or use of civil defense survey meters. The actual- radiation level was very low, consistent with an undamaged,~ properly packaged gauge.
L While at the scene of the event, the Texas inspector discussed the matter with l Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Ennis Fire Department personnel, and a reporter-.
The matter is considered closed.
This information is current as of 9:00 a.m., September 11, 1989.
The NRC received no media inquiries.
Region IV informed NMSS and PA.
