SUBJECT:

. TRANSMITTAL OF CHAPTER 12, " CLIME NODING STUDY," OF WCAP 14407, "WGOTHIC APPLICATIONS TO AP600"

REFERENCE:

1. Westinghouse Letter NSD-NRC-96-4816, "WGOTHIC Applications to AP600, WCAP-14407", September 10, 1996.

Dear Mr. Quay:

By this letter, we are submitting Chapter 12, " Clime Noding Study," of WCAP 14407, "WGOTHIC Applications to AP600" for your review. An annulus model and the AP600 containment evaluation model were 'used as a basis for performing sensitivity calculations with the EGOTHIC code to evaluate clime noding sensitivity. The calculations summarized in Chapter 12 indicate the results are insensitive to either the clime noding pattern or the clime noding structure over the range of variables and conditions evaluated.

Sensitivity calculations reported in Chapter 12 were performed with Version 4.1 of the EGOTHIC '

l code which was configured for testing. Version 4.1 of EGOTHIC corrects an error in the clime

\\

calculation model that resulted bl an over-prediction of the heat removal in the clime on which film dryout is calculated to occur.

The AP600 containment evaluation model described in Chapter 4 of WCAP-14407 was amended to incorporate features and enhancements identified by both NRC and Westinghouse review. This amended model was used to perform the sensitivity calculations reported in Chapter 12. Pending feedback from the ongoing NRC reviews and detailed checking of support calculations, no future revisions are planned.

The Westinghouse Electric Corporation copyright notice, proprietary information notice, application for withholding and affidavit are attached.
