Knighton, Chief Licensing Branch No. 3 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 South Texas Pr.' ject Unit 1 Docket No. STN 50-498 Unit 1 e5I Eramination Plan

Dear Mr. Knighton:

Enclosed fo your review are three (3) copies of the South Texas Project Preservice Inspection Examination Plan for Unit 1. As prev'ously discussed with Mr. Martin Hum (MTEB), the enclosed Unit 1 PSI Examination Plan is HL&P's preliminary plan for examination of Class 1 and 2 piping and components in accordance with 10CFR50.55a and ASME Section XI. This plan will be revised during the performance of the PSI to reflect the as-built conditions determined from walk-downs of the applicable systems and components.

A master copy of the Unit 1 PSI Examination Plan containing all revisions will be maintained on-site by our examination agency, Southwest Research Institute. The Master Examination Plan will be available on-site for NRC inspection. Separate examination plans are currently being prepared for submittal to NRC that will address the balance of the Section XI PSI examination requirements not covered in the enclosed plan (i.e., eddy current examination of the steam generator tubing and visual examination of Class 1, 2, and 3 component supports).

The PSI examination plan for eddy current examination of the steam generator tubing is expected to be submitted to the NRC in September, 1985. The PSI examination plan for visual examination of component supports is expected to be submitted to the NRC during the first quarter of 1986.
