Identification and Description of Occurrence:

i Unit 1 250 volt ma h battery number 1 was removed from service in order to bypass a cracked cell wbich was allowing slight electrolyte leakage and an electrical path to ground.

I Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

l Unit I refueling outage.

Unit 2 at 99%.

Unit 3 at 97%.

l Action specified in the Technical Specification Surveillance Requirements met due to inoperable equipment. _ Describe.

None Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

A cracked cell in 250 volt main battery number 1 had a 1-inch vertical crack at the top of one cell which was allowing slight electrolyte leakage and an electrical path to ground. Crack possibly caused by damage during shipment or installation.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no danger to the health or safety of the public, no release of activity, no daarse to the plant or equipment, and no resulting significant chain of events.
