SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 Post Test Evaluation of Loft L3-1 and Semiscale S-07-10D Experiments (File: 1510.3)

Gentlemen:

By letter dated February 24, 1981, Mr. R. W. Reid requested further post-test analysis of the Loft L3-1 and Semiscale S-07-10D experiments. Our response to Mr. Reid's letter, dated April 1,1981, provided preliminary information and committed to provide additional information by June 1,1981.

Attached are two reports prepared by Babcock & Wilcox on behalf of AP&L and other B&W owr.ers. Attachment I is a post-test evaluation of the Loft L3-1 experiment. Attachment II presents the results of B&W's post-test analysis of the Semiscale S-07-100 experiment. We feel that the information provided in the attached reports adequately addresses the concerns expressed in Mr. Reid's letter and further demonstrates the ability of the CRAFT 2 computer code to predict small break LOCA behavior. As noted in our letter of April 1,1981, the attached information should adequately address the NRC staff's concern described in Item 4.1.1.1(2) of NUREG-0565 and later incorporated by reference as part of Item II.K.3.30 of NUREG-0737.

As indicated in the attached reports, we feel that the verification method (post-test vs. pre-test) used for the Loft L3-6 test is an improvement and helps to eliminate difficulties such as those encountered with the Loft L3-1 and Semiscale S-07-10D tests.

Very truly yours, b
