Annual Upda% Requireneist of the Updated Safety Analysr Ceport (USAR), 10CFR50.71 Shoreham Nuclear Power Station i

Docket No. 50-322 Gentlemen:

l Enclosed is LILCO's request for an exemption from the annual t' update requirement of 10CFR50.71(e) (4).

Pursuant to 50.71(e) (4),

LILCO;is required to submit Revision 3 to the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station Updated Safety Analysis Report (USAR) by December j

7, 1989; LILCO vill not be able to meet this deadline.

1 Accord!.ngly, LILOO requests an extension, until June 1, 1990, to complete and subrit the USAR update.

The update submitted on June 1, 1990, will reflect the condition of the plant as of June 1989,-when the Settlement Agreement between LILCO and New York l

State became legally effective.

In the interim, LILCO intends to submit in the near future a Defueled Safety Analysis Report,

which will describe the level of activity truly needed to protect q

the public health and safety for Shoreham in its defueled state.
