1 STATION ,UNIT 1 50-280 e e REPORT NO: 80-050-03L-0 Ev t.NT DATE: 7-25-80 TITLE OF EVENT: HEAT TRACING SYSTEM =.;._=.DRE

1. Description of Event:

With Unit 4fal at 100% power, control room indicat::.o= revealed Re.at Tracing Trouble.. Further investigation re.ve.ale.d that ci:ccc:.:.t 25 Panel 9 ("A Boric Acid Transfer Pump Strip Heat) had a low amp reao1.:r.;. The redundant H.e.at Tracing Circuit was verified operable. This eve~t :.s a degraded mode of operation as specified in T.S.3.2.D(3), and is repc::-table. in accord~n~e with T.S.6.6.2.b(2) .

2. Probable Consequences & Status of Redundant Systeas:

The redundant Heat Tracing Circuit was verified ope::-ab le, which meant he.at was being supplied to the Boric Acid Piping. There::ore, the health and safety of the public were not affected.

3. Cause:

The Heat Tracing Tape failed due to Boric Acid Boil::up on the St.rip Heater.

4. Immediate Corrective Action:

The immediate corrective action was to replace ltbc defective .Heat Tracing Strip Heater, and verify the operability .. o{ the af:f~cted Heat Tracing Circuit.

5. Subsequent Corrective Action: .

The pump was inspected for seal leakage and no eiis~ing evidence of leakage was found, therefore additional actions were not d~ed necessary.

6. Action Taken to Prevent Recurrence:

No additional actions were deemed necessary

7. Generic Implications:

A* task force has been established to study the tot~l spectrum of the heat tracing system in an attempt to discern present pro:lems and reconnnend solutions which will eliminate sporadic failures e:nerienced.
