J The reference transmitted to NRR a report on, the subject which in conjunction with the meeting held at your offices on Augu'st 6, 1980, was intended to form the basis for NRR approval of a proposed replacement weld.
In that meeting several items were identified which required a formal reply in order to close the issues associated with the SSW.
Specifically, o
Clarify the original intent of the dimensional tolerances associated with the fabrication of the
- SSW, o
Provide the as-built dimensional information associated with the out-of-roundness and verticality of the SSW adjacent to the 541'-5H elevation, o
Provide the design margin of the original plug weld design, o
Provide an assessment of the secondary stresses of the proposed partial penetration weld due to its eccentricity, o
Discuss the leachability of lead from the selected shield material and provide the results of the various qualification
- tests, and o
Provide the rationale for leaving known defects in the SSW.

Each of the above items is discussed in the enclosure to this letter, a
supplement to the original report entitled "Engineering Evaluation of the WNP-2 Sacrificial Shield Mall", submitted with the reference.
The NRR concerns were discussed informally in your offices on August 15,
- 1980, with the responsible Structural Engineering Branch reviewer.
It is our understanding that these concerns are now resolved, and as such, the technical issues being reviewed by NRR on the subject weld may be closed.
Due to our schedule needs for release of the
- SSW, we respectfully request that you expedite processing a letter stating your concurrence with the proposed replacement weld.
A copy of this letter should also be transmitted to the Office of Inspection and Enforcement in order to prevent schedule delays.
