No: 14-036 June 18, 2014 CONTACT: David McIntyre, 301-415-8200 NRC Announces Opportunity to Request a Hearing on Fermi 2 Nuclear Plant License Renewal Application The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the opportunity to request a hearing on an application to renew the operating license of the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant, located in Monroe County, Michigan.
Fermi 2 is a boiling-water reactor operated by DTE Electric Co. DTE filed an application dated April 24 seeking to renew Fermi 2s operating license for an additional 20 years. The current operating license expires at midnight on March 20, 2025. The NRC staff has determined the application contains sufficient information for the agency to formally docket the application and begin its technical and environmental reviews. Docketing the application does not preclude requesting additional information as the reviews proceed, and it does not indicate whether the Commission will renew the license.
A notice of opportunity to request a hearing was published today in the Federal Register. The notice includes detailed instructions for requesting a hearing through the NRCs E-filing system. The deadline for filing petitions is Aug. 18.
The application and information about the license renewal process are available on the NRC website. A copy of the license renewal application is available at the Ellis Library and Reference Center, 3700 South Custer Road, Monroe, Mich.
